Guatemalan officials have arrested a prominent newspaper editor who has overseen investigations into corruption. That's prompted denunciations by politicians, anticorruption activists and civic groups. Prosecution agents arrested José Ruben Zamora Marroquín at his home on Friday night, searching his home, seizing telephones and accusing him of money laundering. Zamora Marroquín is a prize-winning journalist who heads the newspaper El Periodico. Human rights activist Eleonora Muralles said officials we not pursuing corrupt people but rather opponents.Journalists protested Saturday outside a courthouse where the case is being heard.U.S. Congressman James P. Pakistani officials say the country's powerful army chief has contacted Washington, seeking U.S. help in securing an early release of a crucial $1.7 billion installment from the International Monetary Fund to Pakistan. The country is struggling with a deepening economic crisis and is trying to secure tranches from the IMF but there has been a considerable delay. Several government officials told the AP on Saturday that Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa discussed the issue with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman this week, appealing on Washington to use its influence with the IMF to help Pakistan. Pakistani-U.S. relations have been troubled in recent years, mainly over the issue of neighboring Afghanistan, now run by the Taliban.

LOS ANGELES — In the spring of 1980, Julian Nava found himself about to become a pioneer again.

Daniil Kvyat's anguishing absence from racing will finally end Sunday at Indianapolis. The promising Russian with the Formula One résumé qualified 36th for the NASCAR Cup Series road course race, his first start since late 2020. The 28-year-old posted three podium finishes in seven years on the international circuit. He spent last season as an F1 backup driver and was supposed to drive this year in FIA's world endurance series. But his team withdrew after the governing body imposed sanctions and restrictions on Russians after the country's invasion of Ukraine. Now he'll become the first Russian to start a Cup race.

Federal regulators are giving Boeing the green light to soon resume deliveries of its big 787 airliner. That's according to a person familiar with the situation who talked to The Associated Press on Saturday. Boeing has been forced to stop deliveries of the 787, which it calls the Dreamliner, for most of the last two years because of production problems. But the Federal Aviation Administration is telling Boeing it will approve the company’s process for validating retrofits to each plane so they can be delivered to airline customers. That will create a valuable source of cash for Boeing. The planes are built in Washington state and South Carolina.

A law enforcement official overseeing police reform in Baltimore has been tapped to lead the Phoenix Police Department. Michael Sullivan will join the Phoenix agency in September as interim chief. He's expected to serve up to two years while Phoenix searches for a permanent chief. Current Chief Jeri Williams is retiring. The Phoenix Police Department has been the subject of a wide-ranging federal civil rights investigation. City Manager Jeff Barton noted Sullivan's work in overseeing police reform in Baltimore when he announced his hiring in Phoenix this week. Baltimore has been under federal oversight since 2017 after the U.S. Justice Department released a scathing report detailing longstanding patterns of racial profiling and excessive force.

Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story likely will be out a bit longer than expected after manager Alex Cora said a second-opinion exam revealed a “a little hairline fracture” close to his right wrist. Story has been on the injured list with a bruise since July 14 after getting hit on the right hand with a pitch during a game on July 12 against from Tampa Bay’s right-hand by Corey Kluber. The 29-year-old Story signed a $140-million, six-year deal with the Red Sox during spring training after spending his first six big-league seasons with Colorado.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — As of noon Saturday, 25 deaths have been confirmed across the eastern Kentucky counties impacted by Thursday’s flash flooding.

Evacuations ordered for over 100 homes after wildfires in California, Montana explode in size.

Wildfires fed by windy and hot conditions have grown dramatically in California and Montana, forcing evacuation orders for over 100 homes. In northern California, the fast-moving McKinney fire tore across an estimated 28 square miles by Saturday morning after starting Friday in Klamath National Forest. Meanwhile in Montana, a wildfire doubled in size to more than 6 square miles near the town of Elmo and Flathead Lake. Roughly 200 miles to the south, Idaho residents remained under evacuation orders as the Moose Fire in the Salmon-Challis National Forest burned more than 67 square miles of timbered land near the town of Salmon.

TROY, Mich. — Hours after his biggest opponent won Donald Trump’s endorsement, Republican gubernatorial candidate Kevin Rinke emerged Saturday morning at his campaign event undeterred, saying the former president's support doesn’t guarantee a win.

SEATTLE — The Seattle area is likely to exceed 90 degrees Saturday for a fifth straight day, continuing a heat wave that has triggered an excessive heat warning through Sunday from the National Weather Service.

The White House says President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 again Saturday, slightly more than three days after he was cleared to exit coronavirus isolation. It's a rare case of “rebound” following treatment with an anti-viral drug. White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor says in a letter that Biden “has experienced no reemergence of symptoms, and continues to feel quite well.” In accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Biden will reenter isolation for least five days. The agency says most rebound cases remain mild and that severe disease during that period has not been reported.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises are among those shifting COVID-19 test requirement policies in the wake of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention formally ending its COVID-19 guidance program.

The two fires started just 17 miles apart in the rugged terrain of California's western Sierra Nevada — but their outcomes couldn't have been more different.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — On the top of Iris Hsueh’s list of concerns living in Taipei are COVID-19 restrictions, electricity prices and, if she’s being honest, the latest news on Taiwanese pop stars. Nowhere on that list is the proposed visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the potential Chinese b…

Iranian state media say flash floods triggered by heavy rains killed at least seven Iraqi tourists in northeastern Iran. Saturday's fatalities are the latest in rising casualty tolls as the downpours continue to lash the country. The official IRNA news agency said the tourists were part of a 13-member group of Iraqis visiting Iran. They were traveling in a crammed station wagon on a road near the city of Mashhad on Saturday when a flash flood swept their car away. Among the fatalities were five women and the group’s Iranian driver. Three Iraqis were missing while the other passengers managed to get to safety.

A wildfire near the California border with Oregon exploded overnight from 300 acres to an estimated 18,000 acres, prompting evacuation orders for nearby communities.

The concept of personhood that underlies anti-abortion laws in some states considers fertilized eggs, embryos and fetuses as people with the same rights as those already born. Some who oppose abortion say the standard would end almost all abortions and that it brings moral clarity to debates about the procedure. But other abortion opponents insist exceptions should be made in cases of rape and incest, or to protect the life of the pregnant woman. Abortion rights supporters say personhood could hamper in-vitro fertilization or subject women who have abortions to murder charges. At least five states have adopted personhood laws or constitutional amendments. Georgia's law is the most extensive, granting tax breaks and child support to fetuses.

The co-pilot of a small cargo plane has died after falling from the aircraft in North Carolina before it made an emergency landing. News outlets report that the body of the co-pilot, 23-year-old Charles Hew Crooks, was found Friday in a backyard in the town of Fuquay-Varina, about 30 miles south of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The pilot made an emergency landing at the airport Friday afternoon after reporting that one of the wheels had come off the landing gear. He was treated and released from a hospital with minor injuries. The pilot was the only person on board the turboprop aircraft when it landed. Local, state and federal authorities are investigating.

Coronavirus booster shots covering BA.5 may be little more than a month off, but Dr. Anthony Fauci says his retirement is far more distant.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — As search and rescue operations continue in eastern Kentucky counties affected by catastrophic flooding, thousands of people remained without power Saturday.

An Arkansas man has been sentenced to two life terms in prison for fatally shooting a police officer during a traffic stop in 2020 and firing at another officer on the scene. A jury on Thursday convicted 24-year-old Kayvon Ward of first-degree murder in the death of Hot Springs police Officer Brent Scrimshire and aggravated assault for shooting at the other officer, who wasn’t struck. The same jury sentenced Ward on Friday. The judge ordered Ward to serve the sentences consecutively. Defense attorney William James says there are “no winners,” only losers in the case.

It’s a mega win.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A mysterious daguerreotype of a woman and a pair of jeans possibly made by Levi Strauss himself are among nearly 1,000 Gold Rush-era treasures recovered from the fabled “Ship of Gold” now on display in Reno.

The retirement of franchise sacks leader Ryan Kerrigan closes an era for Washington football. Kerrigan was the last of the star players when the team was known as the Redskins before the name was dropped in the summer of 2020 in favor of the temporary Washington Football Team. Kerrigan was honored Saturday during the first week of the first camp as the Commanders. But much has changed in three years with only 11 players in training camp remaining from the days of the old name. That is a product of coach Ron Rivera’s roster overhaul since taking over.

President Joe Biden has nominated the former board chairman of the nation's largest public utility to rejoin the panel. Huntsville, Alabama attorney Joe Ritch is Biden's nominee to return to the board of the Tennessee Valley Authority for a term that expires in May 2025. Ritch left the board in 2017 after a Republican-controlled Senate failed the previous year to confirm former President Barack Obama’s reappointment of Ritch and two others. The nine-member board currently has four vacancies, not counting two sitting members who continue to serve after their terms expired in May. Ritch now joins five other Biden board picks awaiting Senate confirmation.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (AP) - Results from Scotch football:

A Virginia judge has entered a default judgment against a Libyan military commander after he repeatedly failed to show up for depositions in a federal lawsuit in which he is accused of war crimes. The exact amount of the judgment against Khalifa Hifter, who spent decades living in the U.S., will be determined at a future date. Plaintiffs say they are optimistic they can collect any judgment that is awarded because they believe Hifter and his family still own extensive property in northern Virginia. A judge said Friday that default judgment was appropriate because Hifter blew off multiple scheduled depositions about his role in fighting that has plagued the country over the last decade.

Novak Djokovic is holding out hope that he’ll be able to compete at the U.S. Open despite not being vaccinated against the coronavirus. The 21-time Grand Slam champion says on his social media accounts that he’s been training as if he’ll play at Flushing Meadows when the last major of the year begins Aug. 29. He wrote: “I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete, while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to US. Fingers crossed!” The United States does not allow unvaccinated noncitizens to enter the country. That is why the Serb needed to sit out big events in Indian Wells, California, and Miami this season.

Anti-abortion groups are looking to the courts, lawmakers and elections to facilitate more abortion restrictions and bans after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June left the issue up to states. After a half-century of pushing for restrictions, social conservatives are in a new place: Defending bans in court. And while several states already had deep restrictions queued up ahead of the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson, abortion opponents are looking to lawmakers in others to follow suit. The outcomes of elections across the country in November could be key to whether they can accomplish those aims.

Spain’s prime minister has expressed support for Bosnia to become a candidate country for European Union membership amid fears that uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine could fuel instability in the ethnically torn Balkan nation that went through a devastating conflict in the 1990s’. Pedro Sanchez came to Sarajevo from Serbia, where he kicked of his tour of the Balkan region on Friday. Bosnia is still dominated by nationalist politicians long after the end of the 1992-95 war. The country has been locked in political and ethnic disputes that have stalled its EU bid. The political deadlock has sparked concerns that Bosnia could face further ethnic divisions if it is left behind in the EU process.

Sean Crocker’s chip-in eagle on the par-5 18th gave him a two-stroke lead headed into the final round at the Hero Open. The American is bidding for his first European tour title and finished at 3-under 69 to keep Jens Dantorp of Sweden two shots behind after three rounds at Fairmont St. Andrews. Crocker started the day with a one-shot lead and moved to 18 under for the tournament. He's going for a wire-to-wire win. Dantorp is alone in second after a bogey-free 69. Adrian Otaegui (64) and David Law (65) are both three shots off the lead.
